Mix It Up In Midtown
November 28, 2011
Expo attendees can find Midtown, one of Houston’s most culturally
diverse areas, just southwest of downtown, across from I-45. As one of Houston’s oldest communities, Midtown boasts a number of restaurants with exquisite histories, atmospheres and menus. Keep in mind, this is only a very small sampling of what Midtown has to offer; be sure to check out the Expo Map handed out on site for a more thorough listing of great locations available in Midtown, as well as several other popular neighborhoods near the George R. Brown Convention Center.
Breakfast
- The Breakfast Klub on Travis Street is not only one of the most popular eateries in midtown, but arguably in all of Houston. With a line that stretches out the door, The Breakfast Klub is eager to serve up its signature Katfish and Grits or Wings and Waffles all day long. But worry not, with upwards of four well-trained “kashiers,” we can tell you from experience that visitors blaze through the line and straight into their tenderly-made comfort food.
- Right around the corner you will find Tacos a Go-Go with its unique cultural décor and one-of-a-kind, free-spirited ambiance. This laid back joint offers delicious tacos made before your eyes and is a great, fun location for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Lunch
- Chef Monica Pope of t’afia transforms an innovative line of local and organic food into culinary sensations. The menu is reinvented daily and dishes range from such exotic fare as antelope, quinoa and celeriac to standards like macaroni and cheese and bread pudding.
- Visit Ibiza Food & Wine Bar for a phenomenal lunch menu. Favorite appetizers include the foie gras and a soul-warming crab bisque. Delicate sea bass slathered in mango chutney is accompanied by a Rioja wine broth for delicious effect. And trust us, you won’t forgive yourself if you don’t try the mocha espresso bread pudding afterwards.

Dinner
- Brennan’s of Houston on Smith Street has a long and storied 40-year history, including numerous tales of resident ghosts. Enjoy an exquisite mint julep while being regaled with ghost stories by the expertly trained staff. Sample reinvigorated classics like the Bourbon Molasses Lacquered Bobwhite Quail and Blue Crab Stuffed Texas Flounder while enjoying a $0.25 martini – the astonishing price is available with the purchase of an entrée.
- Chef Bryan Caswell has built a great following for his seafood restaurant, Reef. In 2008 it was listed as the #1 Seafood Restaurant by bon appétit magazine and has received top billing for its flawless seafood. Don’t overlook the sweet potato and bacon ravioli or the steamed mussels with Shiner Bock beer and toasted ancho broth.
Nightlife
- Barcadia on Travis Street appeals to the kid in anyone. As the name indicates, this newly-expanded hotspot combines the beverage options of a bar with the playfulness of an arcade. Have a drink while playing Space Invaders or giant Jenga on the wrap-around patio.
- Visit Pub Fiction any day of the week between 11 a.m. and 2 a.m. for a drink, or even a late bite, with their kitchen staying open until 11 p.m. This sports bar has events nearly every day ranging from live music and game watching parties to 16 oz. steak night and Name That Tune Trivia.
